Professor Ilija Katic has devoted his entire career to excellence in mathematics. He is a Master Teacher who has established his unique teaching methodology and has been successfully applying it in the classroom for decades. Mr. Katic has published an award-winning mathematics textbook in former Yugoslavia. This textbook became the mandatory curriculum foundation for high school mathematics in the country.
Mr. Katic founded and led a math and science oriented magnet school in former Yugoslavia, called the Mathematics High School. Under his lead, students started winning regional and even national mathematics competitions. The Mathematics High School became the most reputable high school in the country. Mr. Katic’s students won several gold medals at the International Mathematics Olympiads, even when no medals were won by students from larger European countries. Student enthusiasm was the key to this success. Mr. Katic knew how to evoke enthusiasm in every young person. They were just waiting to be inspired!
As faculty member of the University of Sarajevo, Mr. Katic taught methodology courses to future math teachers. Thousands of teachers went through Mr. Katic’s rigorous training. Those who followed Mr. Katic’s teaching methodology became the most well-known teachers in their regions. But to follow this methodology, the teachers had to be maximally engaged.
In Canada, Mr. Katic taught math in five Lower Mainland private secondary schools. His teaching style led to immediate success. His students soon discovered that they were ‘born mathematicians’ because through Mr. Katic’s teaching methods they realized that math was not as difficult as they had previously thought.
While teaching mathematics in Canadian high schools, Mr. Katic noticed a significant gap between what was covered in schools and the level of knowledge required for entering University. With this in mind, Mr. Katic wrote a whole new math curriculum for students in grades 5 to 12. This curriculum teaches math fundamentals, comprehension and problem solving. It builds on math knowledge from their school education and adds a dimension of depth and breadth needed for success at University.
Math for Excellence Enrichment Program® is the result of Mr. Katic’s life work.
This is not the first math enrichment program Mr. Katic created in Canada. The key factor in achieving a high level of quality in a program, Mr. Katic observed, is that it is not enough for teachers to be educated in math. The teaching staff needs to provide a consistent approach and class structure, as well as follow the proven teaching methodology, and be enthusiastic about mathematics. This enables a seamless transition for students from one level to the next. All instructors teaching this program are specially trained, approved and certified by Mr. Katic.
